“Archaeologists have a dig and they look into that dig to find whatever is hidden below. I create my own dig and then I have to look into it to find what has meaning for me. And once I find something – and it’s like finding a little part of a jigsaw – I have to find the other pieces. They begin to develop. There’s no question about when it ends; I know when it ends because I get to a concept and I know it’s the right conclusion. And I’ve often been surprised; that’s why I began photographing the changing stages, so I could recall the process of metamorphosis.”
